What is S.M.A.R.T.

Shriners Membership Action Renewal Team. (S.M.A.R.T.) by Tunis Shriners No. 179

A growing program led by a team of younger, enthusiastic, forward thinking individuals in Ottawa, Ontario Canada, brainstorming and actuating ideas on attracting new members to their unique philanthropy- all the while working on the engagement and activity of their current Nobility.

As creative thinkers, S.M.A.R.T. seeks out like minded Shrine Masons and Masons alike who can and want to find innovative and exciting ways to have fun with each other while involving  families and friends. S.M.A.R.T. involvement does not require membership fees . It requires participation and willingness to have “FUN WITH PURPOSE” to better the Shrine Philanthropy, Shriners Hospitals for Children®.

In 1870, thousands of Masons visited Manhattan including a team of Masons frequently gathered for lunch at Knickerbocker Cottage on Sixth Avenue in New York City  to discuss starting a new fraternity for themselves that focused on enjoyment and fellowship over ritual. Walter Fleming M.D and William Florence an Actor made this happen when invited to an Arabian diplomat party. At the diplomat’s party, there was an exotic ambiance and music that gave Fleming ideas for a fraternity theme. He combined these ideas with what he knew about rituals to form the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine.

During the early 1900’s, the number of Shriners International members grew rapidly. The membership rate soared to 250,000 nobles in 1958 from 150,000 in 1946. After World War II, this organization experienced astronomical growth as those returning from the war sought ways to regain the friendships they had in battle. The growth in hospitals coincided with the growth in nobles and temples. The endowment value reached $125 million in 1958. There are almost 200 temples around the world today. These temples hold concerts and tournaments. Shriners International has a mission to support children.

To discover, develop and provide innovative events, modern concepts and solutions to the Shrine Membership for a sustained future.

As a fraternity founded on the Masonic principles of Brotherly love, Truth and Relief.

S.M.A.R.T. promotes the welfare and enhances the happiness of the Shrine Membership. Their principles of Charity, Justice and Fidelity quickens the spirit of  those who are involved; Thus  cultivating good fellowship; perpetuating itself as a fraternal organization, and providing Mankind with benevolence and protective Order through the resources of its philanthropy, Shriners Hospitals for Children®.

To Be One. Ask One.
